"Bio-Briquettes: An Efficient Alternative Energy Source for Nepal"
Why do we need a Resource Center?
BG-RCNN Objectives
-
To develop a strong network of stakeholders who can contribute invaluable knowledge and experience to the bio-briquette sector.
-
To strengthen the knowledge base of member organizations to ensure quality information, product and services regarding bio-briquettes are delivered to the local, national and international levels.
-
To broaden the research and development conducted in the bio-briquette sector to ensure innovative and practical bio-briquette technologies are adopted and promoted.
-
To disseminate and transfer current product knowledge to local communities and other relevant parties.
-
To strengthen the ability of communities to become sustainable community based organizations (CBOs) for bio-briquette production.
-
To promote the use of bio-briquette technology in Nepal.
Need For Alternative Energy In Nepal
Forest wood is the traditional natural resource predominantly relied on to fulfill the majority of energy demands of Nepal. Demand for this precious resource coupled with decreasing supply, creates an unsustainable practice as demand is being depleted faster than it can be produced and supplied. This sort of deforestation within the country will prove to be devastating in the long term as the resource, without a doubt, will be completely exhausted and, related negative side effects that are often not considered will also be exacerbated. These effects include increased soil erosion, desertification, loss of biodiversity, and negative impacts to land and watershed management. Furthermore, within Nepal, energy shortages such as kerosene, propane, etc. are a day to day reality for the people of Nepal. Therefore, all of these direct and indirect impacts of deforestation and energy shortages indicate that there is an imminent need for an alternative energy source for Nepal if fuel supply is to meet the ever increasing demand in the future.
Bio-Briquettes: A Promising Solution
Alternative energy creation in Nepal stands to be a very successful sector if the energy sources are feasible and efficient. Currently in Nepal, 80% of the population relies on fire wood to meet their ever-increasing energy needs. This reliance on a single natural resource is highly unsustainable and the need for diversification and expansion into the alternative energy sector is imminent. Banaspati Gueetha (Bio-briquette) is one technology that is a simple yet sustainable technology to be used as an environmentally friendly and healthy alternative energy source to fire wood and cow dung and an economical alternative to expensive kerosene and LPG
Within the context of Nepal, the bio-briquette sector is relatively new to the country. There are many existing organizations that have an immeasurable amount of knowledge regarding the bio-briquette but to date these organizations have been limited in their ability to share their resources, experiences and projects with other sector experts. This lack of public awareness leads to inefficient use of resources, ambiguity and duplication of documents and projects as stakeholders are unaware of what is already being done.
